Lathe Cut Knurl Tool

This cut knurling tool was designed for use in an AXA size toolholder and manufactured as part of our in-house tooling system. The body is machined from steel, with a pressed hardened pin that allows the knurl wheel to rotate freely under load. A brass cap retains the cutting wheel while providing controlled axial location and wear resistance. Engraving is applied directly to the tool for identification and reference.

The system is configured to accept interchangeable knurl wheels, supporting straight, 30 degree left, 30 degree right, and diamond patterns.

Cut knurling removes material rather than displacing it, resulting in more consistent tooth form and improved surface definition, particularly on harder materials or thin walled parts. Cutting forces are lower and more predictable compared to crush knurling, reducing load on the machine spindle and minimizing part distortion. This approach allows precise control over knurl depth and pitch, producing repeatable results across a wider range of materials.
